Uses:
Breadfruit leaves are usually boiled and taken as a treatment for diabetes. It is used to lower the blood pressure in hypertensive persons. Additionally, it is taken as a tonic. Slightly crushed leaves are put on the forehead to relieve headaches. The sap is sometimes applied to the skin to prevent the spreading of 'liver spots'(Tinea versicolor), and other contagious skin ailments because it promotes healing and restoration of the skin.
History/ Tradition:
Captain Bligh introduced this native of the South Pacific to Jamaica in 1793. Ever since, it has been utilized by the Jamaican people both as a food and a medicine. The fruit is eaten roasted or boiled and is used in soups, salads and puddings. The blossoms or swords have been used to make an excellent preserve, and can be substituted for candied peel in baking.
